Naptown & White River

Model Railroad Club
40 years of model railroading in Greater Indianapolis!

We are a primarily HO-scale based model railroad club, dedicated to the enhancement and growth of the model railroader. We believe the purpose of model railroading is to build and maintain a layout for the enjoyment of the members and to educate and entertain the public. We are the oldest active railroad club in Indianapolis.

Club Overview

Approximately 30 members maintain a standalone building, which houses an HO-scale model railroad with a sizable mainline, several branch lines, 8 towns and industry areas. In 2008, we are expanding to include an N-scale layout as well. Our DCC (digital command control) layouts supports radio and infrared Digitrax walk-around throttles. The club is open to visitors most weeks. The members help each other grow in the many skills needed in model railroading, as well as volunteering in community events and shows associated with railroading. For the new and established model railroad enthusiast, the club is a great way to participate in the "World's Greatest Hobby."

Visitor Nights

The Naptown & White River Model Railroad Club is open to visitors every Monday night from 7pm - 9pm, except on Holidays.

More information is available on the Club Info page.

March 2008 Show

Our March 2008 show was a huge success! We had 10% more tables, our attendance was up 20%, and we had more operating layouts on display -- N, HO and G -- to inspire and delight the young and young at heart. Our Open House allowed us to proudly show off our projects from 2007, with major changes to East Bend and other expansions to enable Operations Nights, starting in 2008. We also have the "skeleton" of our new N scale benchwork and track area set-up. Come grow and expand with us!

Here’s some great feedback we received after the show:

My son K. wanted to write you and tell you thanks for a great day at your show and club.  He really got a kick out of Ken, and he wanted to tell him hello, and that we'll come on a Monday evening sometime.  We were  most impressed with the reasonable prices and your club layout!  Wow!

K. is 6 years old, and as previously stated, wanted to write his own thank you so please bear with us.  Again, thanks and see you soon.

i had a great time thanks ken thats made me wanna scream

Layout Progress - Slide Show

We've worked hard over the past 6 months, making major layout changes to add more versatility, enable more complex operations nights, and finalize our new passenger station. Come check it out if you haven't been recently! We also have some pictures up on the Layout Info & Photos section of this website.

Expanding...expanding...expanding!

In addition to completing the renovations to East Bend, we are planning to add Operations Nights. We've developed names for all the buildings and industry areas, and will soon be adding signs and labels. We're one step closer to adding Ops Nights. Stay tuned!

In August 2007, we started building a permanent N scale layout. This will complement our HO-scale focus, allowing even greater flexibility and options for the local model railroader. In February 2008, we completed some of the initial benchwork for the new N scale area, complete with a "cardboard" cut-out of the planned space. A sub-team has been working on design principles and some initial scoping of the layout. There will be several industries (lumber, coal, etc.), and the general setting will be in the Appalachian Mountains.

Bill is part of the N scale layout team.  We prepared a mock-up of the proposed layout for our March 2008 show.  This picture was taken in late February.

Just a short couple of weeks later, we have the main benchwork outline completed.

Come join us and learn railroading techniques from the ground up... literally!
